On June 30th 1973 a full solar eclipse was due to transit across the width of Africa. The Concorde prototype 001 was part way through its flight test program in Europe, it was dispatched to Gran Canaria fitted with experimental roof viewing panels and a scientific mission team.

To execute its observation mission Concorde 001 flew supersonically within the eclipse shadow for 70 minutes across western and central Africa which remains a unique aviation and scientific achievement.
