20 year old Seargent Dennis Noble is a young RAF fighter pilot who had recently joined 43 Squadron just before it moved from Northolt to Tangmere early in August 1940. He had converted onto Hurricanes at OTU Sutton Bridge and lasted just 27 days in front line Squadron service during the heat of the Battle of Britain.

On August 16th he was engaged in an interception of a formation of JU87 Stuka's and claimed a confirmed victory during this action. The painting positions Seargent Noble over the south coast in Hurricane P3179 as he rolls into a diving pursuit of the Luftwaffe aircraft. 

Seargent Noble was shot down and killed on August 30th by an ME109 during a dogfight over Brighton, P3179 hit the ground vertically near the junction of Portland and Woodhouse Road in Hove. The huge crater was quickly repaired and it was 56 years later, in 1996, when the site was formally re-excavated to discover the remains of P3179 and the pilot still in the wreckage far underground.
