"Confrontation at the water hole" - by Simon Cattlin
66 million years ago a stalking Tyrannosaurus Rex ambushes a family of Triceratops close to a large water-hole in, what is today, western America. The Triceratops is a rugged, heavy and armoured herbivore that was characterised by its distinctive skull that incorporated three horns and a wide frill that combined to provide a powerful defensive capability.
The T-Rex was the apex predator of the age and represented the iconic pinnacle of the meat eating lineage over the previous 90 million years. The “king of the tyrant lizards” was a hugely impressive animal growing up to 40ft and weighing as much as 9 tons. It is believed that 1.7 billion T-Rex’s have been been on earth during the late Cretaceous period and the overall population of Triceratops was much larger than that.
High above this drama an ominous harbinger of doom appears in the upper atmosphere signalling that a major event is about to unfold….
Original oil on canvas painting, 61cm x 51cm, signed by the artist.
