Earth is a pretty planet by any standard and holds an increasingly significant place in all of our hearts. The painting is of the wide crescent of Earth from 100,000 miles towards the moon. The initial Apollo 8 Earth-rise pictures, followed by many of the latter Apollo missions, became the most widely reproduced images of all time.

As the world's astromomers continue to scan hundreds of star systems for possible planets ( 1700+ discovered so far ) we will continue to wonder about the detailed combination of events and criteria that allowed complex life to flourish on Earth ( consistent with the Drake formula ). I hope we learn to look after it and minimise the negative impact we appear to be making. 100% of all the life we know of depends on this fragile biosphere.
