Jupiter from the ice blades of Europa

Ice blades, known as Penitentes, have not yet been directly observed on Europa although there is a strong likelihood that they may present around the equatorial zone. They are found on earth and are likely to exist in different forms on Pluto and on several of the solar system moons. On Europa they may be between 10-50m high and could well limit our ability to land and remotely explore this fascinating Galilean moon.

From a jagged icescape we view the sunlit crescent of Jupiter across the orbit of IO.

Original oil on canvas, image size 61cm x 46cm. Signed by the artist.
