The Lockheed Martin F35B Joint Strike Fighter started to arrive in the UK during 2016, and will serve the RAF and RN as the Lightning II. Over 130 of these advance 5th generation aircraft are being ordered (65 of which should be operational at any one time) and the UK is the only level 1 partner with the US on this project which maintains huge global ambition and is probably the most expensive military aircraft program in history. The UK Lightning II will be operated from both land bases and the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.
The UK MOD is currently deploying 4 operating units for the Lightning II:
* 17(R) Squadron based at Edwards Air Force Base as the operational evaluation unit.
* 617 Squadron based at RAF Marham.
* 207 Squadron based at RAF Marham.
* 809 Naval Air Squadron, also based at Marham.
The Lightning II will be the backbone of strike operations for many years together with the Eurofighter Typhoon. The painting depicts a fast climbing Lightning II ascending into a darkening and dramatic UK evening sky.
