"Packing a punch" - aviation art by Simon Cattlin

from £85.00

The Buccaneer ( originally Blackburn Buccaneer ) was designed in the 1950's as a carrier-borne attack system to engage the USSR's new Sverdlov class cruiser. The Buccaneer was designed to fly fast, at a very low altitude, engaging below the soviets ship's radar horizon. It was built with a wide range of weapon options including both conventional anti-shipping munitions and nuclear options.

It first flew in 1958, entered service in 1962 and operated within the Royal Navy until 1978. The powerful Rolls Royce Spey equipped S2 version quickly replaced the early Mk 1's and the Buccaneer was considered a potent strike platform by the Royal navy and subsequently by the RAF who adopted the existing fleet after the TSR-2 and F-111K options were cancelled. The RAF flew Buccaneer's in the 1991 Gulf War and the fleet was retired in 1994.

"Packing a punch" depicts three Fleet Air Arm Buccaneer S2's flying fast and low eastbound over of a stormy Atlantic seascape highlighted by the late afternoon sun.
