"Pismis 24-1" - astronomical art by Simon Cattlin

from £64.00

Deep within NGC6357, in the constellation of Scorpius, lies the open cluster Pismis 24. One of the brightest stars in the cluster is Pismis 24-1 which was thought to have been the most massive star on record with an estimated size approaching 300 solar masses. More recent analysis indicated that 24-1 is in fact a multiple system of at least 3 stars which still makes each of the component stars some of largest discovered.

The painted image is a close-up section of part of NGC6357, the whole nebula is a huge and impressive star forming cloud close to NGC 6334. I’m planning two large scale canvases of these nebulas for the future.

Original oil on canvas, image size 70cm x 50cm. Signed by the artist.
