"Spitfire begins" - aviation art by Simon Cattlin
The Spitfire, designed by R.J.Michell during the early-mid 1930’s. The prototype Spitfire, K5054, first flew on March 5th 1936 piloted by Matt Summers. The light blue paint was actually added after the first flight but, from an artistic point of view, its much nicer than the multi-tone aluminium and primer.
The Spitfire went on to become the most iconic RAF fighter of all time and was an emblem of the of our resistance during the early years of WWII. Millions of lines of text, and millions of photos bear homage to this famously popular aircraft. I’m painted many variants of the Spitfire over the years and I’ve been lucky enough to have a flown gentle aerobatics in a TR9 based at Goodwood.
Original painting on canvas, framed. Signed by the artist.
