“The brave to war” - figurative art by Simon Cattlin

Against a dark sky an order of Knights charge the enemy at full gallop.

European military fighting formations utilised armoured cavalry from the 7th century and they were effectively deployed through the middle ages with increasingly heavy armour as mounted knights sweeping all before them ahead of the infantry forces on foot.

The first use of mounted noblemen took place in 4th century Asia and the use of massed forces on horseback continued until world war one although much of the heavy armour became redundant during the 17th century as musket use and artillery weapons took hold.

Lightly protected but highly mobile dragoons, lancers, hussars and troopers continued the tradition of warfare from horseback that had lasted for over 1600 year.

Original oil painting on canvas, image size 61cm x 50cm. Signed by the artist.

£ 875.00
